A reboot from a previous installation is pending. Please restart the system and rerun setup.

I was trying to install Exchange Server 2007 SP3 Management Tools on a Windows 7 PC. During the installation I received the following error:

A reboot from a previous installation is pending. Please restart the system and rerun setup.

I resolved this error by deleting the the REG_MULTI_SZ value PendingFileRenameOperations from HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

  9. I'm trying to do the exact same thing, albeit from an ex-Exchange 2003 server which is now just a BDC, but I have no PendingFileRenameOperations key to remove :|

  14. Thanks! This did the trick for me - it's worth noting that there's another culprit for this called "InProgress" - same registry location. In my case the key wasn't present, but the rename one was.

  17. Hello, might be helpful: I was trying to upgrade Ex2010 Sp1 Mgmt Tools only to SP2. Didn't let me through for "reboot pending". In my case there was no HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations key. I did a regedit search for "PendingFileRenameOperations" and there it was, under another Control Set hive. I deleted it, retried the check, and bang, it showed nice green and let me upgrade.

  18. Thank you Anonymous replier above!

I spent ages trying to figure out. I was looking for the PendingFileRenameOperations key in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations but I had no such path in my directory.

Turns out I was mus-interpreting the text.

It's the PendingFileRenameOperations key in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager you delete. No wonder I couldn't find it! :)
